Withania somnifera, commonly known as ashwagandha, is a plant from the nightshade family. It is known by a number of different names including poison gooseberry, Indian ginseng, and winter cherry. Withania is classed as an adaptogen – a natural chemical that allows you to cope with physical stress. It contains a number of alkaloids.A study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology [1], recruited 180 infertile men and gave them 5g of ashwagandha daily for 12 weeks. Sperm motility and quality improved, and the reduction seen in testosterone concentrations started to elevate. These results were echoed in a similar study using 60 Indian men. In this trial, T levels increased by ~14% and sperm quality improved, but again used infertile men as volunteers [2].To date, there is only one study available that has used healthy men as participants [3]. In this study, 57 young, healthy males underwent a weight training program over an 8-week duration. They were given 600mg daily Withania root during the trial period too.Compared to a placebo, the herb root group improved their strength and suffered less muscle damage. They also saw a modest increase in testosterone of 15%.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a plant from Fabaceae family which is used for many medical plans. Fenugreek has shown the good result to improve testosterone level in man.A study [4] evaluating fenugreek conclude that the group receiving 500 mg of fenugreek daily significantly increased total testosterone (6.57%) and bioavailable testosterone (12.26%). Because of this significant increase in total and free testosterone without a corresponding increase in DHT and estradiol, fenugreek appears to inhibit (but incompletely) aromatase and 5α-reductase activity. One very recent study [5] carried out in the Centre for Integrative Clinical and Molecular Medicine has found that 60 men aged between 25 and 52 who took a fenugreek extract twice daily for six weeks showed an overall positive effect on physiological aspects of libido (sexual drive or desire for sexual activity). Serum prolactin and testosterone levels remained within the reference range.   Mucuna Pruriens (velvet bean) is an Indian bean-like climbing herb.Mucuna is widely used in Ayurveda (Indian herbal medicine) and its usage as a Parkinson’s relief and sexual tonic date back thousands of years. It has also quite a reputation for its effects on increasing testicle size. Recently this herb has gotten the interest of several researchers. It’s due to the fact that MucunaPruriens contains L-DOPA (levodopa) which is the precursor for the hormone/neurotransmitter dopamine.A study conducted with infertile subjects – showed that 5g/day of M. Pruriens seed powder for 90 days, increased testosterone levels by 38% on infertile subjects and 27% on healthy subjects [6], LH was raised by 41% on the guys shooting blanks and by 23% on healthy subjects. As to be expected, sperm quality rose in both groups (more so in the infertile group), semen dopamine levels were elevated, and prolactin (a hormone that suppresses LH release) was down by -32% and -19%.   Tribulus has mainly been used as an herbal testosterone booster or included in formulations to promote increased muscle mass or strength. For example, when researchers from Lithuania recently provided athletes 625 milligrams of a 40%-saponin-containing Tribulus three times per day for 20 days, they reported that circulating testosterone increased significantly during the first 10 days of the experiment. However, it didn’t rise further for the remainder of the study. If Tribulus does affect testosterone levels, it might do so by increasing luteinizing hormone (LH) or follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Another explanation to any rise in testosterone could be that it happens as a secondary response to Tribulus’ ability to significantly reduce blood glucose.
